Physical Description: A distinguished looking man, it’s hard to tell if Jokull is really in his later fifties or not because he will occasionally dye his hair back to its natural dark brown, though the gray is definitely showing. When he is in a more business-directed mood he will keep his hair cut short and out of his face. His skin is darker than most of his Finnish countrymen because he was always engaged in sports such as polo and kayaking when he was younger. This causes his eyes, a piercing shade of blue, to stand out even more and those eyes are always looking at you like they just know what thoughts are going through your head. Jokull prefers to have at least a bit of a beard going on. He stands at about six foot one with a well-muscled frame that he keeps up thanks to a personal trainer and many trips to the gym. His outfits are always well-put together and he’s the sort to wear a three-piece suit more often than jeans and a t-shirt. Personality: Raised the only son of a demonic-blooded blood witch and his psychic wife, Jokull was privileged and spoiled. He grew up into a still privileged man with a knack for business. On the outside to almost everyone, Jokull is well-spoken, well put together and possibly even charming, if in a way that practically rubs your face in the fact that he’s richer and better than you. He always seems to know exactly what to say to get on someone’s good or bad side and has no shame in using that to his advantage, or to know when someone is a danger to him. This well-known side is also the one that has a charming, devoted and graceful wife on his arm whom he showers with attention and gifts. In reality… Jokull is clever and conniving and uses everything he can to boost himself higher up the ladder. He is a shrewd businessman who has climbed all over everyone to get to the top and has no shame about it. Jokull’s demonic blood makes itself known when it comes to things that he views as his – most notably his wife. No, he doesn’t love her and feels no attraction (theirs was an arrange marriage thanks to a blood oath between their parents) but she is his and to be touched by no one else. This has led to an abusive relationship between the two on his part, it makes him feel more powerful for some reason. Like a sickening high he gets off people’s pain, though Linnea’s he truly enjoys. It’s not that he hates he so much as what she represents and he can’t be rid of her. Sexuality: Closeted Homosexual History: Sven and Alina Niemi married young and gave birth to only one son, Jokull. At an early age he showed signs of having inherited skills from both of his parents, knowing things that people thought without them saying it. When he was only six, his father began instructing him in the ways of blood magic. That’s right, a kid cutting himself so that he could learn magic. At least his mother was there to coddle him after his lessons, though that was stopped when he was ten because his father deemed him too old for that. Jokull didn’t actually see his mother too much after that except for at meal times or when his father was around… though Alina would still do her best. This didn’t go over well with him and, when he was thirteen, his mother ended up dead, supposedly from a swimming accident. Jokull knew the truth. His father had killed her and that instilled a sense of fear in the boy along with twisting completely how he looks at a marriage relationship. When he was sixteen he had a confusing moment that led to him kissing one of the neighbor boys after a pick-up game of hockey in his backyard. Sven caught the two and after scaring the other boy off, he beat Jokull near to death and when he was conscious, gave him quite the lecture along with cursing him so that every time he kissed anyone who was not female he would experience a sharp, burning pain all over his skin. Not long after, Sven took Jokull to meet his betrothed… a five-year-old girl named Linnea. He was not impressed and did not see her again until he graduated from college and business school. He attended the best college in Finland before going to a specialty school in London, finishing his education when he was twenty-four. At this age he returned to Finland to see his father and was, once again, told to go and see Linnea who was now thirteen. Upon arrival he saw her rolling around in the snow with her own neighbor boy. That was completely unfair to his way of thinking; why should she enjoy anything he couldn’t? Much as had happened to him, he chased the boy off and then tried to do the same to Linnea. He ended up in a snowbank and, pride hurt, waited for someone to come and apologize as he knew he deserved. When Linnea returned he slapped her and told her exactly how things were going to be. Disgusted, but feeling the need to stake his claim, Jokull kissed Linnea and left. He did very well upon his move to America, starting out in New York with friends of his father as an associate and quickly finding his way up the rungs and avoiding the pitfalls that tended to catch other people. Like Microsoft? He was all over investing in that and has been reaping the benefits ever since. When he was twenty-seven he did get caught up into the underground market of drugs, though he’s always clever enough to make sure the only thing he gets are the benefits without anyone knowing he’s the one getting them. His telepathic abilities help a lot with that, anyone who suspects is stuck onto a different trail or taken care of. He has quite the web of connections going, though New York became a little too hard for him and he transferred himself to Detroit, MI when he was twenty-eight, taking over a failing business with every intention of turning it around. Though he had only just begun work when he was called by his father and reminded that Linnea had turned seventeen and was able to be married. So he returned to Finland for the ceremonies and, despite a considerable argument, took Linnea back to America with him. It didn’t take long for their relationship to establish itself and only nine months later they welcomed their first son, Leif. Jokull paid more attention to the child than he did his wife, determined that he would raise him to be like him, taking over the care of the child as much as he could from his wife, who he believed to be insufficient. Of course, having lived without having what he wanted for years he never once thought that it might be difficult for her… and when he discovered that she was unable to take it and had turned to someone else, a new facet of their relationship showed itself – the abusive one. He would not kill her as his father had his own mother, not wanting to have Leif grow up without her since it had a negative impact on him. Over the next ten years Jokull continued to rise through the world of business, legal and illegal, and the lives of the Niemi’s became ever more luxurious as a result. He enjoyed the lifestyle that he created and has become quite used to living it. Every business party or social event he was invited to with Linnea on his arm, showing off the trophy wife and keeping up the perfect appearance. Lucky for him she’s quite adept at pulling off the act no matter what she feels and even better at covering any bruises he might leave. The biggest problem that arose between the two was when Jokull finally acknowledged the fact that his eldest daughter, Kajsa, was not his daughter. He snapped more than he ever had and to this day no one knows how Linnea made it through that alive… but she did and, due to his pride, Jokull continued with the façade. He also has his suspicions about Valterri. Not too long after Linnea gave birth to their last child, Jokull stopped sleeping in the same bed with her every night and she turned to drugs, spiraling so far down that, for appearances, he was forced to send her to a drug rehabilition clinic and claim she was back in Finland visiting family for a year. Upon her return she insisted on moving somewhere else and the Niemi family took up residence in Scarlet Oak, though Jokull has maintained his penthouse in Detroit. His son, Leif, also lives there because he is going to take over the family business one day, to Jokull’s unending pride. Even better, it seemed like rehabilitation had helped Linnea learn how to behave. Finally. Since the Light of May: Infuriated with the whole mess, to put it simply. Now people think a little more about everyone around them, himself included and some have wondered if he got where he was through some gifts they don’t have. He hates that and, despite being a supernatural, doesn’t support supernatural rights anymore than he does gay ones. Far as you’re concerned? He’s a human and he likes it that way. Though privately he quite enjoys teaching Leif the art of blood magic and constantly attempts to get his other children to learn as well. Special Skills/Abilities: He’s got a knack for getting people to do what he wants without hardly trying, that whole charming thing. Jokull also has quite the head for business and has always managed to stay a step ahead of the game when there’s about to be a fall in the economy, something which he claims to have learned from his father and is attempting to pass onto his son. Personal Weaknesses: Only Son – Growing up, Jokull was pampered and spoiled… and told that he had a responsibility to make sure that the Niemi name continued on as strong as it was when it was given to him. Anything he did to shame his family ended with a beating and repetitive tasks until he learned not to do it again. Even to this day he refuses to let his public actions shame his family name and this carries over to his wife and children since they too share the name. If somehow he does something to cause shame then he’ll go home and deprive himself of something. Or his wife. Same thing. Daddy/Mommy Issues – His father killed his mother and, as much as he loved her, part of Jokull has been influenced enough to believe that perhaps his mother deserved it. He struggles with these memories from time to time and it can lead to him closing himself away and drinking it all away. On the good side it has led him to trying to be a good father sometimes, but on the bad side it has led him to believing that all mothers are faulted and do not deserve to just be left be. Example number one; Linnea. Unacknowledged Sexuality – There’s a reason Jokull has no attraction to his gorgeous trophy wife; he’s gay. Unfortunately for him he was raised in a traditional Finnish as the only son and that meant he had it beat into him (mostly mentally) that he had to reproduce and there was nothing else for it. When he got kissing the neighbor boy as a teen… it didn’t go well. Suffice it to say that, while he’s gay, Jokull doesn’t actually go around sleeping with men so he’s never satisfied. Lifetime of sexual tension, anyone? Cursed – It might be more mental than anything by now, but when he was sixteen Jokull had a curse laid on him by his father that prevents him from enjoying any sort of physical contact with men. It probably broke when Sven passed away, but Jokull isn’t keen on testing it out. Churches, blessed places – Demonic blood shining through, Jokull cannot set foot inside of a church or stay anywhere that’s been blessed and angelic-blooded people drive him crazy. This blood is quite strong and led to him, to his father’s chagrin, not even being able to get married in a church. Even walking or driving past one causes him to shudder. Linnea – Ever since he was twelve, Jokull knew that he was going to grow up and marry the blonde girl no matter what he wanted. He’s resented her, turning her into the image of everything about his life that he couldn’t control. He couldn’t control the oath their fathers swore so he controls her. Or tries to, and when he fails he makes her regret it. Sometimes it takes his toll on him and he turns to drink. Several public occasions have needed to end earlier than it should for them because he felt offended and is not as good at the good husband act when he’s angry. And her affairs? He knows about every single one because he’s got that telepathic gift and they have all ended up beaten, dead or ruined. He’s had to pay off law enforcement quite a few times. And he swears that she’s going to be the death of him because she just won’t listen and be a good housewife who wants absolutely nothing. Illegal Dealings – What, you didn’t think he got where he was by staying on the right side of the law, did you? If he hadn’t paid off all of the right people through his life, Jokull would be in jail for several life terms and if the right people decided to break their silence he’d probably wind up there anyhow. So he tends to keep them well-paid so that they don’t do that. Or, occasionally, they wind up dead. Target on his Back – That Linnea thing again. Her very close friends who know, or even suspect, the truth about their relationship hate him for a pretty damn good reason. And that’s not even getting into their eldest daughter, Kajsa… or should he say her oldest daughter? Jokull has to watch over his shoulder no matter where he is and more than once he’s ended up in the hospital thanks to an ill-done poison attempt. Kajsa, Valterri – Jokull’s no idiot, he knows that his eldest daughter and youngest son are not actually his. But what is he supposed to do, disown them and publicly announce that his wife was unfaithful? No, he sucks it up and pretends like they’re his because he has to, but he feels no real love for either and it shows in their private lives. This has led to feelings of bitterness between them, especially with Valterri since unlike Kajsa, he has no idea why his father can be standoffish with him. Telepathy – He’s got a pretty fair reign on it, but some things cause it to spiral out of control. Such as drinking dulls it and, when he doesn’t know what other people are thinking, Jokull doesn’t know how to react to other people. With his telepathic abilities gone it’s almost like he’s an awkward teenager. It goes the other way as well, he forgets he has limits and can try to read too many minds at once and end up with quite the headache which only time will get rid of. Personal Strengths: Rich Businessman – At least if it costs money, Jokull knows he can buy it. He’s never wanting for money and has made sure that the same will be true of his family once he is gone. Even Linnea. Because his lawyer insisted. He’s also able to buy and sell you without a second thought. Family: Linnea Selanne-Niemi; wife. 44-year-old water elemental. Jokull also has a penthouse in Detroit that he spends time at when he feels the need to be close to his business and far from his wife.
